Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mian has taken responsibility for two sick children who were found sitting by the roadside in the cold in Anwara upazila.
On Tuesday, the deputy commissioner formally assumed responsibility for the children’s treatment, safety and future rehabilitation.
The rescued children are four-year-old Ayesha and two-year-old Morshed.
The girl told officials that their home is in the Maulvir Dokan area of Satkania upazila and that their father is Khorshed Alam and mother Jhinuk Akhter.
After news of the children’s distressing condition surfaced on social media, the deputy commissioner immediately instructed Anwara Upazila Nirbahi Officer Tahmina Akhter to take necessary measures.
Following the instructions, the children were brought to the deputy commissioner’s office on Tuesday after receiving primary treatment.
The deputy commissioner spent time inquiring in detail about their physical condition, family identity, the circumstances of their rescue and the overall situation.
He also directed the Department of Social Services to take necessary steps to ensure the children’s future safety and rehabilitation.
On Sunday evening, local CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver Mahim Uddin rescued the children after finding them sitting by the roadside in biting cold in the Majorgate area of Barkhain union in Anwara upazila.
Mahim Uddin’s wife Sharmin Akhter said both children were ill and that the younger one was disabled.
She said after bathing them with warm water and feeding them at night, the children felt some relief, adding that she suspected the parents had abandoned them due to illness.
The deputy commissioner said all necessary assistance would be ensured so that the children can be raised in a safe and secure environment and supported in their future lives.
“Naturally, we all love our own children the most, but those who can go beyond their own children and embrace someone else’s child are truly human,” he said, adding that love for another’s child is true humanity.
