The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has recovered Pulsar motorcycle used in the heist of Tk1,21,25,000 from DL Petrol Pump in the capital’s Uttara, which is owned by a cousin of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
A team from DB Uttara Division recovered the motorcycle on Thursday night from the garage of a house in Nandipara area of Khilgaon. The details of the recovery were disclosed by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md Elias Kabir, during a press briefing at DB office on Minto Road on Friday afternoon.
He noted that the motorcycle was recovered based on information extracted from arrested suspect Sagar Baroi, 40, during his interrogation on remand.
According to DC Kabir, the DB has been prioritising the investigation of this sensational heist from the very beginning.
Thus far, DB has arrested five individuals, including Sagar Baroi, from Dhaka and Narayanganj. Officers also recovered four firearms, some looted money, and other evidence from their possession.
Additionally, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested three other suspects in connection with the crime. Among those arrested, Baroi and Jalil are currently undergoing interrogation on remand in DB custody.
Based on information provided by Baroi during his remand, a DB team conducted a raid at around 10:30pm on Thursday at a building’s garage on Hafiz Uddin Master Road in Khilgaon’s Nandipara, where the getaway Pulsar motorcycle was found.
The DB official revealed that Baroi had been living in the Khilgaon building by renting a flat under the guise of being an Italy-returned expatriate. After committing the robbery in Uttara, he parked the motorcycle in the garage and fled.
Initially, following his arrest, Baroi misled investigators by claiming that the getaway vehicle had been kept in Gopalganj.
A subsequent raid was conducted there based on his statement, but the motorcycle could not be found. It was only after further rigorous interrogation that detectives extracted the correct location and recovered the vehicle from Khilgaon.
DC Kabir also noted that as soon as the news of Baroi’s arrest spread, his family members quickly packed up their belongings and moved out of the Khilgaon flat to an unknown location.
The DB official added that operations are still ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects and to recover more weapons, noting that further arrests may be made as the investigation continues.
