Cristiano Ronaldo has ended months of speculation surrounding his future by signing a two-year contract extension with Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr. The 40-year-old, who joined the Riyadh club in late 2022, will remain at the club until 2026.
Al Nassr confirmed the extension with a video posted across their social media channels, featuring Ronaldo saying: “The story continues” before declaring: “Al Nassr forever.” The announcement follows a period of uncertainty, sparked by the expiration of his previous contract on June 30, and fueled by a cryptic social media post last month in which he hinted that his time at the club was over.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino added to the speculation when he suggested that Ronaldo could move to a club competing in the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup in the US, which had an extra transfer window from June 1-10 to allow clubs involved in the tournament to sign new players. However, Ronaldo swiftly quashed those rumours, revealing he would not play in the competition, though he had received “plenty of invitations” to do so.
Ronaldo’s move to Al Nassr in December 2022 shocked the footballing world, especially as it came just weeks after Manchester United terminated his contract. Despite his arrival raising the profile of the Saudi Pro League, Ronaldo has yet to win a major trophy with the club.

In his first season, Al Nassr finished second in the Saudi Pro League, narrowly missing out on the title to Al Hilal. The following season, they ended up runners-up again, trailing their Riyadh rivals by a substantial 14 points. This season, the club finished third and was eliminated in the semi-finals of the AFC Champions League.
Ronaldo’s goal-scoring record at Al Nassr, however, remains impressive. In 40 appearances during the 2023/24 season, he netted 34 goals, bringing his total to 99 goals in 111 matches for the club. His individual form has been stellar, and he recently helped Portugal win the UEFA Nations League, scoring his 138th international goal in a penalty shoot-out victory over Spain in the final.
As he approaches the remarkable milestone of 1,000 senior career goals, Ronaldo’s future remains firmly at Al Nassr, where he will now begin the 2024/25 season under new head coach, following the dismissal of Italian Stefano Pioli earlier this week.
