Courtney Walsh has been appointed as Zimbabwe’s bowling consultant ahead of the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, with the West Indies great already working with the squad as they prepare for the tournament in Sri Lanka.
Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) confirmed the appointment on Tuesday, saying Walsh had begun his role immediately. The former fast bowler, the first man to take 500 Test wickets, brings extensive coaching experience, having previously worked as specialist bowling coach with Bangladesh’s men’s team and as head coach of the West Indies women. In 2024, he also served as a technical consultant with the Zimbabwe women’s side.
“I think we have a very good chance once we execute well and work together as a team and adapt to the conditions,” Walsh said. “The combination of the attack has impressed me from watching and the potential that’s within the team.”
Zimbabwe’s bowling attack for the T20 World Cup, led by captain Sikandar Raza, includes quicks Blessing Muzarabani, Richard Ngarava and Tinotenda Maposa. Brad Evans and Tashinga Musekiwa provide seam-bowling allround options, while the spin department features Wellington Masakadza, Graeme Cremer and Raza, giving the side an experienced mix.
ZC managing director Givemore Makoni said the decision to bring in Walsh was driven by his capacity to mentor players at the highest level.
“As we prepare for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, it was important for us to bring in someone who understands what it takes to succeed on the global stage,” Makoni said. “Courtney’s knowledge, professionalism and ability to mentor players will be invaluable as we sharpen our bowling resources for the challenges ahead.”
Zimbabwe have been drawn in Group B of the tournament alongside Australia, Ireland, Oman and co-hosts Sri Lanka. All four of their group matches will be played in Sri Lanka, across venues in Colombo and Pallekele.
The tournament marks Zimbabwe’s return to the T20 World Cup after missing out on qualification for the 2024 edition.
