A Dhaka court has ordered the seizure of income tax records of former assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Ziaur Rahman, over allegations of acquiring assets beyond known sources of income and money laundering.

Ziaur Rahman is currently on post-retirement leave.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Faiz passed the order on Tuesday following an application filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission.

Court bench assistant Md Riaz Hossain confirmed the order.

He also allegedly possessed assets worth Tk1.31 crore in his name while concealing relevant information and conducting suspicious transactions through multiple bank accounts. The ACC filed a case on these allegations.

The application said Ziaur Rahman is an income taxpayer. For a proper investigation, the commission needs to seize all original income tax records, including the permanent and miscellaneous sections, from the beginning up to the 2024–25 tax year.

AL leader NID blocked

In a separate order on the same day, the court directed the blocking of the national identity card of Khan Md Aktaruzzaman, vice-president of Dhaka Metropolitan North Awami League.

On behalf of the ACC, assistant director Nurul Islam filed an application seeking the measure. The application said verification and inquiry into Akteruzzaman’s asset statements are under way.

During the inquiry, reliable sources indicated that he owns both movable and immovable assets acquired through corruption.

The ACC told the court that there is a risk Akteruzzaman may transfer assets illegally and flee abroad. If he leaves the country, there is a strong possibility that records related to alleged corruption and asset tracing will be hampered. For the sake of a fair investigation, blocking his national identity card is necessary, the commission said.
