The Bangladesh Coast Guard is actively promoting public awareness in Chittagong to protect the national fish, Hilsa. As part of its ongoing efforts, the Coast Guard has intensified operations to conserve Hilsa and prevent the killing of juvenile Hilsa (Jatka).
Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haq, Coast Guard Media Officer, emphasized that the Coast Guard plays a crucial role in safeguarding Bangladesh’s sea, coastal, and riverine areas. He highlighted the dangers posed by illegal artisanal trawling boats, which harm marine biodiversity, disrupt fish reproduction, and damage the ecosystem. As a result, operations against these boats have reduced their use, improving the chances of restoring fish stocks in the Bay of Bengal.
To protect Hilsa during its breeding season, the Fisheries Protection and Conservation Act-1950 has imposed a nationwide ban on the collection, transportation, sale, and purchase of Hilsa from October 4 to October 25, 2025. The Coast Guard’s Eastern Zone has stepped up its patrols, conducted 24-hour surveillance, and engaged in public awareness campaigns, including miking, leaflet distribution, and meetings with fishermen.
