The individual accused in the shooting of Charlie Kirk is anticipated to be formally charged on Tuesday, prior to his initial appearance before a judge.
Authorities intend to bring a capital murder charge against the Utah man, who they allege was motivated by a “leftist ideology” and could have been “radicalised” through internet activity before his arrest for the killing of Charlie Kirk, reports AP.
The charges for 22-year-old Tyler Robinson are scheduled to be filed before his first court proceeding since being accused last week of the shooting. Kirk was a prominent conservative activist known for mobilising young Republicans and contributing to President Donald Trump’s 2024 reelection.
Evidence collected by investigators includes a rifle and ammunition marked with phrases associated with anti-fascist and meme culture, which were recovered following the shooting at Utah Valley University in Orem. Kirk was shot during one of his frequent campus speaking events, where he often engaged in debates.
Prosecutors are evaluating multiple charges, with the most severe being aggravated murder, a crime that carries the potential for the death penalty upon conviction.
A virtual hearing for Robinson is planned for after the charges are submitted. He has been detained without the possibility of bail since his arrest, and it is not known if he has legal representation.
Although authorities state that Robinson has not been cooperative, they note that his relatives and acquaintances have provided statements. Utah’s governor indicated that, according to those who know him, Robinson’s political leanings moved leftward in recent years and that he frequently visited the “dark corners of the internet.”
The FBI Director stated that DNA evidence connects Robinson to a cloth found wrapped around a rifle discovered near the campus and to a screwdriver located on the rooftop from where the shot was fired. The director also mentioned that, prior to the shooting, Robinson wrote in a note about having an opportunity to eliminate Kirk and his intention to do so.
The governor noted that a motive is still under investigation and that further details might emerge after Robinson’s first court appearance. He also confirmed that Robinson’s romantic partner is transgender, a fact some have suggested could link the attack to Kirk’s anti-transgender stance.
However, authorities have not confirmed if this was a factor. The shooting occurred as Kirk was answering a question related to mass shootings, gun violence, and transgender people.
The state’s Commissioner of Public Safety reported that Robinson’s partner is cooperating with the investigation. While it is believed Robinson acted alone, officials are examining whether anyone was aware of his plans in advance.
Following the assassination, the nation is confronting concerns over increasing political violence, the profound divisions leading to this point, and the potential for change.
Despite appeals for civility, some who objected to Kirk’s divisive remarks on gender, race, and politics have made critical statements since his death. This has prompted many Republicans to demand accountability for those they feel disrespected his memory, resulting in individuals facing job loss and other professional repercussions.
