Bangladesh University (BU) students who participated in the July Uprising have demanded proper medical treatment and rehabilitation for the injured, as well as comprehensive support for the families of the martyrs.
The demands were made at a discussion, documentary screening, poetry recitation and prayer session organised by the university on Monday to mark July Mass Uprising Day, said a press release.
Speakers described the July Revolution as not merely a movement but a true reflection of the collective aspirations of the masses against discrimination and persecution. They urged everyone to build a humane, democratic and discrimination-free Bangladesh to realise the martyrs’ dreams.
Student participants who shared their experiences at the event included Imam Hasan Jewel, Kawsar Ahmed Rifat, Abdullah Al Noman, Asaduzzaman Asad, Imam Mehedi Hasan, Shahin Ahmed, Fardin Ahmed, Sajedur Rahman Soumik, Meheran Bukhari, Sabrina Afroz Srebonti (sister of martyr Saikat) and Law Lecturer Md Raziul Alim.
They recounted the adverse conditions they faced, the bravery of fellow protesters and the unwavering support of the general public.
Vice-Chancellor Md Jahangir Alam said the martyrs’ courage and sacrifice had powerfully manifested the people’s yearning for justice, equality, democracy and a discrimination-free society.
“To truly honour the martyrs, students must uphold honesty, humanity and patriotism,” he said, calling on the younger generation to build a responsible, knowledge-based and just society.
Registrar Brig Gen Md Mahbubul Haque (retd) said the courage and unity demonstrated by students during the movement would inspire future generations, stressing that the contributions of those killed and injured must never be forgotten.
The event concluded with a special prayer seeking the salvation of the martyrs, recovery of the injured and continued peace and progress of the nation.
