The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) and the newly elected executive committee of the Bangladesh Merchant Bankers Association (BMBA) have pledged to collaborate in enhancing the country’s capital market.
In a courtesy meeting held today at the BSEC building in Agargaon, leaders from both organisations discussed strategic measures to bolster the market’s foundation, as per a press release.
BSEC Chairman Khondoker Rashed Maqsood stressed the importance of bringing quality companies to the market. He highlighted that the primary responsibilities of merchant banks include issue management, underwriting, and portfolio management.
He further pointed out that the updated IPO rules, recently gazetted, have opened significant opportunities to introduce reputable and high-performing companies into the capital market.
Khondoker Rashed Maqsood reaffirmed BSEC’s commitment to supporting the listing of quality firms and urged BMBA members and issue managers to take the initiative in this regard. He assured that BSEC would provide all necessary assistance to attract companies that inspire investor confidence.
The discussion also focused on the need for merchant banks to strengthen their capabilities in capital formation, portfolio management, and corporate advisory services.
The Chairman noted that improving the efficiency, capacity, and ethical standards of merchant banks would naturally enhance the appeal of the capital market to investors and other stakeholders.
BSEC Commissioner Farzana Lalarukh emphasized the importance of digital transparency, recommending that each merchant bank and its association maintain detailed, informative web pages and portals. She stressed that providing authentic and detailed information on these platforms is crucial for raising awareness among investors and preparing them to engage effectively in the market.
BSEC senior officials present included Commissioners Md Mohsin Chowdhury, Md Ali Akbar, Farzana Lalarukh, and Md Saifuddin, along with executive directors and other senior officials.
The BMBA delegation was led by its President Iftekhar Alam, with General Secretary Sumit Poddar, Vice President Md Monirul Haque, Treasurer Syed Rashed Hussain, and executive members Gazi Mohammad Tareq, Suman Kumar Kundu, and Md Sohel Haque also in attendance.
