Brothers Union have asked the Bangladesh Cricket Board to cancel relegation for the ongoing Dhaka Premier League season. The club sent a letter to BCB president Tamim Iqbal on May 19.
The letter came from Brothers Union convener Ishraque Hossain. The club said an earlier discussion with Tamim had created a different expectation for the teams.
According to Brothers, Tamim met club representatives on April 9, two days after taking charge at the BCB. During that meeting, clubs were reportedly told that this season would not have a Super League or relegation because of limited time. The title was expected to be decided only through results in the league stage.
Brothers said clubs then planned their season based on that understanding. Teams arranged sponsors, fixed budgets and built their squads.
The club said the situation later changed. After the player transfer window ended on April 18 and 19, the BCB informed clubs that direct relegation would still remain in place.
Brothers called it a major issue for the clubs.
The club also pointed out that no promotion or relegation system was used in the First Division and Second Division leagues this season. Brothers believe using different rules in the country’s top domestic competition creates an unfair situation.
The letter also raised concerns over weather and playing conditions. Brothers said rain has affected many matches this season because of the monsoon period.
The club also claimed that some DPL venues do not have proper drainage systems and quality outfields. Because of this, rainwater has hurt normal playing conditions and affected fair competition.
Brothers asked Tamim to review the matter and cancel relegation for this season.
The club are currently in 11th place among the 12 teams in the Dhaka Premier League table. They have won only one of their six matches.
