Bangladesh cricket faced turmoil again on Thursday as a player boycott delayed the first Bangladesh Premier League match of the day.
The match between Chattogram Royals and Noakhali Express did not begin as planned. Neither team reached the venue for the toss, which was set for 12.30 pm local time. Officials later confirmed that the game would be delayed.
The boycott followed an earlier warning from the Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh. The players’ group had said it would stop all cricket if action was not taken over recent remarks by a director of the Bangladesh Cricket Board.
The impact was felt earlier in the day as well. Matches in the Dhaka Cricket League did not start after the boycott threat came into effect. No solution was reached before play time.
The dispute began after BCB director M Najmul Islam questioned player compensation in public comments. His words drew sharp reaction from players and fans. The BCB later called the remarks inappropriate and issued a showcause notice to Najmul as part of a disciplinary process.
Players, however, remain dissatisfied. They say the step is not enough and want firm assurance and accountability from the board.
In the meantime, CWAB president Mohammad Mithun has called an emergency press conference. The briefing is set for 1.00 pm at Banani in Dhaka. He is expected to explain the players’ stance and outline their next move.
The situation has placed the Bangladesh Premier League under serious strain at a key stage of the season. With matches already affected, doubts now surround the smooth running of the tournament.
The BCB has asked players to stay professional and support the completion of the BPL. But with the boycott active and the press conference approaching, the standoff remains tense and unresolved.
