The body of a tourist who went missing while bathing in the Matamuhuri River in Lama, Bandarban, was recovered on Friday morning after an extensive 23-hour search operation.
The victim, Mohammad Sohan, a resident of Mirpur in Dhaka, had traveled to Lama with a friend, Shakil, on Thursday. The two had checked into the White Peak Station Resort, located near the river.
According to Sadequl Mawla Dhrubo, president of the Lama Tourism Hotel, Motel, and Resort Owners’ Association, the incident occurred around 1:30 pm on Thursday when Sohan entered the river to bathe and was swept away by the current.
The Lama Fire Service was alerted immediately and launched a day-long search but was unable to locate him.
On Friday morning, a specialised diving team from the Chattogram Fire Service joined the search and successfully recovered the body around 11:45 am.
Authorities are completing necessary formalities before handing over the body to the family.
The incident has raised concerns over safety measures for tourists visiting the region’s rivers and natural attractions.
