The bodies of six Bangladeshi peacekeepers, who were killed in a drone attack on a United Nations peacekeeping base in Sudan’s Abyei region, are expected to arrive in Dhaka on 20 December, the Bangladesh Army said on Wednesday.
Bangladesh Army in its verified Facebook post confirmed the development, stating that funeral rites would be conducted with due honours following the repatriation.
The Army also updated the number of injured peacekeepers to nine, revising an earlier figure of eight. All the injured personnel were provided with immediate and advanced medical care and are currently undergoing treatment at the Aga Khan University Hospital, a Level-3 facility, in Nairobi, Kenya. One of the injured has already been discharged, while the remaining peacekeepers are reported to be out of danger.
The attack occurred on 13 December, when a separatist armed group carried out a drone strike on the Kadugli Logistics Base under the UN peacekeeping mission in Abyei region. Six Bangladeshi peacekeepers were killed and nine others injured in the incident.
The fallen peacekeepers were identified as Corporal Md Masud Rana of Natore; Sainik Md Mominul Islam of Kurigram; Sainik Shamim Reza of Rajbari; Sainik Shanta Mondal of Kurigram; Mess Waiter Mohammad Jahangir Alam of Kishoreganj; and Laundry employee Md Sabuj Mia of Gaibandha.
