A local leader of the BNP was killed and at least five others were injured in a violent clash during an arbitration meeting in the Sultanpur area of Brahmanbaria Sadar upazila on Monday evening.
The deceased was identified as Jahangir Alam, 50, a resident of Sultanpur Uttarpara. He had been a candidate for the post of vice-president of the Union BNP Sramik Dal.
According to family members and local sources, the incident stemmed from a long-standing domestic dispute involving Jahangir Alam’s niece and her husband, Md Ataullah, who lives in the same locality. The couple had reportedly been facing marital discord for around five years.
In an attempt to resolve the matter, a local arbitration meeting (salish) was held in the area on Monday afternoon. However, during the proceedings, a heated argument broke out between the two sides, which quickly escalated into violence.
At one stage, associates of Ataullah allegedly attacked members of the woman’s family using indigenous weapons, leaving Jahangir Alam and several others injured.
Locals rescued the injured and rushed them to Brahmanbaria General Hospital, where doctors in the emergency department declared Jahangir Alam dead on arrival.
Following the incident, police visited the scene and began an investigation.
Md Rokib Ur Reza, Additional Superintendent of Police (Brahmanbaria Sadar Circle), confirmed the incident, saying the body had been sent to the hospital morgue for an autopsy.
He added that efforts were underway to identify and arrest those involved, and that legal proceedings were in progress.
