A local BNP leader was critically injured after being attacked with sharp weapons by unidentified assailants in front of his residence in the capital’s Mohammadpur area on Friday afternoon.
The injured was identified as Nurul Islam, 55, senior joint general secretary of Ward No. 33 unit BNP in Mohammadpur.
The incident took place around 2:30pm near Satmasjid Housing in Mohammadpur.
He is currently undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
According to his younger brother Billal Hossain, Nurul Islam had just returned home after Friday prayers when six attackers arrived on three motorcycles and hacked him indiscriminately before fleeing the scene.
Nurul sustained severe injuries to the left side of his face, shoulder and left hand.
Locals rushed to the spot and initially took him to Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital.
He was later transferred to DMCH for advanced treatment.
Billal Hossain said his brother is involved in local waste collection business in addition to his political role in the BNP.
However, he said the motive behind the attack and the identities of the assailants remain unknown.
Ward BNP leader Rusel Hawlader described Nurul Islam as a socially active and well-known figure in the area, adding that he is currently unable to speak due to his injuries.
Inspector Md Faruk, in charge of the DMCH police camp, confirmed that a BNP leader from Mohammadpur was admitted with serious injuries to his face, shoulder and other parts of the body, and is receiving emergency treatment.
Meanwhile, State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj visited the injured leader at DMCH on Friday evening.
He inquired about his treatment and assured the family that the attackers would be arrested soon.
Speaking to reporters, he said CCTV footage shows four masked men arriving on motorcycles and carrying out the attack.
He added that local residents intervened, forcing the attackers to flee.
He also said the incident may be linked to a dispute over a local fair, which has since been shut down, and that police are working to identify and arrest those involved.
Responding to concerns over law and order in Mohammadpur, he said law enforcement agencies are actively working and expressed confidence that the perpetrators would soon be brought to justice.
