BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that political parties in Bangladesh have no doubts about the upcoming national election being held in February 2026.
Speaking to reporters on Friday afternoon at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Manhattan, Fakhrul stressed that Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus’s address to the United Nations General Assembly reflected a firm commitment to holding the polls on time.
Asked whether the chief adviser should have taken a stronger stance on the election in his UNGA speech, Fakhrul replied: “It was already very strong. We, the political parties, have no doubt about February. We are convinced the election will take place in February 2026.”
He noted that the chief adviser had outlined the context in which he took responsibility for the state and the measures adopted to confront challenges.
“We are very pleased that for the first time, opposition political parties were involved in the government’s work and brought to the United Nations. His main objective was to demonstrate national unity, which is a unique effort and much needed in Bangladesh. We have extended our full cooperation in that regard,” said Fakhrul.
He added that BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman had also supported this approach.
On the issue of proportional representation (PR), Fakhrul said: “We have said we are not in favour of PR for the lower house. We have not raised it for the upper house either. But these matters can be discussed further and resolved later.”
BNP’s foreign affairs adviser to acting chairman Tarique Rahman, Humayun Kabir, was present at the briefing.
