BNP has announced a seven-day mourning programme following the death of Khaleda Zia, BNP chairperson and former three-time prime minister.
It was announced at a press briefing held at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka on Tuesday morning.
Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, senior joint secretary general of BNP, said that the seven-day mourning period would begin on Tuesday.
As part of the mourning programme, black flags will be hoisted at the party’s central office and all BNP offices across the country, while party leaders and activists have been instructed to wear black badges.
He added that Quran khatam and doa mahfils will be organised at every party office during the mourning period.
At the same time, condolence books will be opened at the chairperson’s office in Gulshan, the central office in Nayapaltan, and party offices at the district level.
Shahabuddin Talukder, one of Khaleda Zia’s physicians, said that after a prolonged period of treatment, the former prime minister was declared clinically dead at 6:30 a.m. on December 30.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the party is deeply saddened by the death of Khaleda Zia.
He stated that Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has contacted the party regarding the matter, and that a decision from the government regarding burial arrangements and the conferring of state honours may follow.
The BNP also said that the schedule for the namaz-e-janaza and burial will be announced to the media at a later time.
