A businessman involved in BNP politics was shot dead by unidentified assailants after his SUV was ambushed in broad daylight in Raozan upazila, Chattogram on Tuesday evening.
The incident occurred near Madunaghat Bridge in Hathazari area at around 5.45pm.
The deceased was Mohammad Abdul Hakim, 65, a resident of Panchkhain village in Bagoan of Raozan.
He owned a cattle farm named Hamim Agro and had been involved in BNP politics for many years. He was known to be a close follower of BNP leader Gias Uddin Quader Chowdhury, though it remains unclear whether he held any official party position.
According to local sources, the attackers came on motorbikes, blocked Hakim’s SUV, and fired indiscriminately, before fleeing the scene. Critically injured Hakim was rushed by locals to Evercare Hospital in Chattogram city, where doctors declared him dead in the evening.
The motive behind the killing and the identity of the perpetrators remain unknown. Authorities recovered Abdul Hakim’s abandoned vehicle at the crime scene.
The BNP party has confirmed his death.
Monirul Islam Bhuiyan, officer-in-charge of Raozan Police Station, said the police reached the scene upon receiving news of the shooting and an investigation is underway and further details will be provided later.
