General teachers at Barishal University have announced a ‘complete shutdown’ of the institution, declaring Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Taufiq Alam “unwanted” on campus.
The announcement was made on Sunday via a press release issued by the university’s Teacher Society.
Since 20 April, teachers at Barishal University have been protesting, demanding promotions and other issues. As a result of the movement, academic activities at the university came to a standstill, with classes and examinations being suspended.
To resolve the crisis, a meeting was held on 30 April involving the Divisional Commissioner, local administration, the Vice-Chancellor, and teacher representatives, after which the teachers temporarily eased their protest.
However, teachers later accused Vice-Chancellor Mohammad Taufiq Alam of disregarding the decisions made in the previous meeting and proceeding with unilateral actions. Despite calling a Syndicate meeting on 8 May, the Vice-Chancellor allegedly ignored the opinions of Syndicate members.
As a result, in a meeting on Sunday, the general teachers decided to declare the Vice-Chancellor “unwanted” on campus starting 11 May. The teachers also announced a full shutdown of all academic activities, including classes, exams, and administrative work, effective from the same day.
Furthermore, teachers currently holding administrative roles have decided to resign from their positions.
