Bangladesh and the United States have discussed expanding cooperation in peaceful nuclear technology, small modular reactors (SMRs) and the energy sector as Dhaka seeks to strengthen energy security and meet growing power demand.
The issues were discussed at a bilateral meeting between Science and Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam and US Energy Secretary Chris Wright in Washington DC on Thursday.
The meeting focused on advanced nuclear technology, energy security, knowledge sharing and potential cooperation between the two countries.
Faqir Mahbub Anam said modern and safe nuclear technology could play an important role in meeting Bangladesh’s rising energy demand, ensuring energy security and supporting sustainable development.
He said Bangladesh was committed to the safe, secure and responsible use of nuclear technology and needed stronger knowledge, experience and technology exchanges with technologically advanced countries, including the United States.
Chris Wright expressed a positive view of expanding cooperation with Bangladesh in the energy and nuclear technology sectors.
He highlighted the United States’ focus on developing and expanding advanced nuclear technologies, particularly small modular reactors.
SMRs are smaller-scale nuclear reactors that can be deployed more flexibly than traditional large nuclear power plants and are being explored by countries seeking reliable and cleaner energy sources.
The two sides discussed peaceful nuclear cooperation, SMR technology, energy sector support, technology exchange and greater mutual understanding.
Both countries expressed interest in deepening bilateral cooperation and working together in nuclear science, technology and energy sectors.
Bangladesh has been expanding engagement with international partners to explore advanced technologies aimed at improving energy security and supporting economic development.
