Bangladesh face Sri Lanka on Wednesday in their third group match of the AFC U-17 Asian Cup Qualifiers, knowing victory is essential to maintain their push for qualification.
The team sit second in the group with six points from two matches. China lead despite being level on points, thanks to a superior goal difference. Only the group winners will progress to the tournament’s final stage.
In Chongqing, where cold conditions have tested players, Bangladesh have made a strong start. They opened their campaign with a 5–0 win over Timor-Leste, with goals from Rifat Kazi, Bayzit Bostami and Akash, while Manik scored twice. Their momentum continued in the second match as they defeated Brunei Darussalam 8–0.
Goalkeeping coach Arifur Rahman Pannu said the team are keeping their focus. “All our players are fit, and we have finished two matches one after another. The first we won 5–0, the second 8–0. Insha’Allah, we are thinking match by match,” he said.
“Wednesday’s game is very important. With that in mind, our coaching staff are constantly meeting the players, training has gone well and we are fully prepared for the next match.”
Midfielder Bayzit Bostami, who has scored in both games, is eyeing another strong display. “I have scored in the last two matches and we have a big challenge ahead against Sri Lanka,” he said. “I want victory in this match too. I want to perform well and help my team. Our only target is to play in the main phase of the AFC.”
Bangladesh are expected to approach the match positively but remain aware that their toughest tests are still to come against China and Bahrain.
