Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed has said Bangladesh’s economy is steadily recovering as a result of government measures aimed at restoring dynamism to overall economic activities.
“The economy is not destroyed; rather, it is recovering and is currently in a better condition compared to the challenging period experienced in August. The economy is currently in a state of recovery with significant improvements witnessed in key sectors,” he said.
He made the remarks while speaking as chief guest at the “Nagad–DRU Best Reporting Award 2025” ceremony at the International Mother Language Institute auditorium in Dhaka.
Salehuddin Ahmed pointed to clear signs of renewed momentum, noting improvements in foreign exchange reserves and exports. While acknowledging ongoing domestic challenges, he said Bangladesh continues to enjoy a largely positive perception globally, with major international institutions recognising the country’s efforts and progress.
Looking ahead, he stressed the need for fiscal prudence and stronger accountability, referring to past spending on mega projects. Some projects, he said, have become “monuments,” consuming hundreds of crores of taka while delivering limited practical benefit. He urged that lessons be learned and greater restraint shown in future undertakings.
“The coming months are crucial,” the adviser said. “A key responsibility is to refine and coordinate existing structures so they can be handed over to the incoming government, enabling them to advance them more modernly and effectively.”
Noting that national development cannot be confined to economic indicators alone, he said people need more than food and basic sustenance. Education, healthcare and social security, he added, are essential components of meaningful progress and must be prioritised to make Bangladesh happier and more developed.
He also underscored the importance of responsible journalism, encouraging reporters to pursue investigative work, uncover deeper truths and offer constructive criticism where needed.
The adviser said the country is progressing and is expected to move forward at an even faster pace in the future.
BPO–Nagad Management Board Chairman Kaiser A Chowdhury attended the event as special guest, while Dhaka Reporters Unity President Abu Saleh Akon and General Secretary Mynul Hasan Sohel also spoke.
