Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, has said that Bangladesh has boarded the election train through the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu).
He shared the comment in a Facebook post on Tuesday morning, shortly after voting began for the DUCSU election. In the post’s footnote, he wrote: “Through Ducsu, Bangladesh has boarded the election train. Next, the national election train will follow. Congratulations to everyone on the election!”
Referring to previous elections, he added: “Votes that could be cast in a single night are delayed until the next day. Failing to do things on time is a major weakness of this nation.”
Voting for the Ducsu elections has begun after a gap of six and a half years. Polling will continue on Tuesday from 8:00am to 4:00pm across 810 booths at eight centres on campus.
A total of 471 candidates are contesting 28 central positions in the DUCSU election, including 62 female candidates. The highest competition is for the membership posts, with 217 candidates vying for them. In addition, 1,035 candidates are contesting 13 positions across 18 halls of the university.
This year, a total of 39,775 students are eligible to vote, including 20,873 male and 18,902 female voters. Voters are prohibited from carrying bags, mobile phones, smartwatches, any kind of electronic devices, water bottles, or any liquid into the polling centres.
