The government has dismissed Md Tohidul Islam, a former Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) of the Industrial Police, from service for remaining absent from duty without approval and allegedly absconding from his workplace.
The Discipline-2 branch of the Public Security Division under the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification on Tuesday, confirming his dismissal. The order, issued in the name of the President, was signed by Senior Secretary Monjur Morshed Chowdhury.
According to the notification, Tohidul had been absent from his workplace since September 10, 2024, without obtaining permission from the authorities.
The officer later submitted an application seeking 10 days’ leave on health grounds, attaching a medical certificate issued by Rajarbagh Police Hospital. However, authorities said they were unable to verify his whereabouts.
The notification said repeated attempts to contact him by mobile phone failed. Notices were also sent to his permanent and current addresses through local police stations, but he neither appeared before the authorities nor submitted any statement in his defence.
Authorities quoted Tohidul’s elder brother as saying that the family had not had any communication with him since August 5, 2024.
As his absence continued for more than 60 days, a departmental case was filed against him under the Government Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules on charges of “absconding”.
The ministry said Tohidul did not respond to several show-cause notices issued in connection with the allegation.
An inquiry officer later found the charge of absconding proven. Despite being given another opportunity to explain his position through a second show-cause notice, he remained unresponsive, according to the notification.
After reviewing the inquiry report and related documents, the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC) agreed with the decision to dismiss him from service.
