Ravichandran Ashwin has said mental fatigue was the main reason behind his exit from the Indian Premier League.
He left the IPL last year after a poor season with Chennai Super Kings. At that time, he did not explain his decision. Now, he has shared what he went through.
Chennai have started this season in a bad way. They have lost three matches in a row. The five-time champions are now under pressure. They also lost their last match to Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Ashwin spoke about his decision on his YouTube channel. He said, “I could have played one more season. But I was not in that mental space. Last season was very disappointing for me, and I also went through a tough time personally.”
He said he was fit to play but not ready in his mind. “I do not want to go into that. It becomes very disturbing mentally. I decided to retire myself so that no complications are created for the team. It will also give the franchise some financial relief.”
He is also not happy with Chennai’s form this season. “I knew Bengaluru were a strong team. But I had faith in Chennai’s improvement. The way Bengaluru played, they have sent a warning to everyone.”
Ashwin also spoke about the team’s plan to trust young players. “Giving chances to youngsters is not enough. They need the right environment, proper training, and to understand match intensity. Otherwise, they will not be able to prove themselves.”
He also talked about the bowlers. “Every bowler must be used according to his strength. Overton is not that strong with yorkers, but he is being asked to bowl them. As a result, batters are taking advantage easily.”
