Anu Muhammad demands immediate release of Shahriar Kabir

Noted economist, writer, and author Anu Muhammad has questioned the continued detention of Shahriar Kabir, a prominent organiser of the Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, who has been held for months in what Muhammad describes as a “false murder case.”

In a statement made on Facebook, Anu Muhammad expressed serious concern over the denial of bail to the author, who is well-regarded for works such as Oder Janiye Dao and Nuliachhorir Sonar Pahar.

Kabir’s significant contributions to documenting history include his role as a co-author and compiler of the 1987 volume “Ekattorer Ghatak O Dalalra Ke Kothay.”

The book, which provides a chronicle of wartime killers and collaborators, was published by the Muktijuddha Chetona Bikash Kendra, Dhaka, and was authored alongside Dr Ahmed Sharif and Colonel (Retd) Kazi Nur-uz-Zaman.

In his statement, Anu Muhammad suggested that Kabir’s unwavering dedication to the trial of war criminals appears to be the primary reason for his imprisonment under the “Jamaat-influenced interim government.”

The economist noted that he had been raising questions regarding the arrest since its inception and could find no other plausible reason for the detention.

Anu Muhammad further urged the newly elected government not to carry the “stigma” of the interim administration’s actions.

He called for the immediate release of Shahriar Kabir and all other individuals currently detained without trial or under false charges.

Anu Muhammad concluded by pointing out that demanding the release of those unjustly detained does not necessitate an agreement with their individual political ideologies.
