Thomas Tuchel has admitted he may have been “to a degree unfair” in leaving out Trent Alexander-Arnold from his latest England squad, as preparations intensify ahead of the World Cup.
The England national football team manager named a 35-man squad for upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan at Wembley, which represent the final opportunity for players to stake their claim before the tournament in North America.
Despite the expanded squad, Alexander-Arnold was omitted and then overlooked again when Jarrell Quansah withdrew through injury. Instead, Tuchel recalled Ben White, who had not featured for England since leaving the 2022 World Cup early.
“A sporting decision. Maybe a hard choice and maybe, to a degree, unfair,” Tuchel said when explaining the omission. “I know it creates noise when you leave a player like Trent out. We had a conversation, he has to accept it.”
Alexander-Arnold, now at Real Madrid, has regained form after an injury-affected start and recently impressed in the Champions League, helping his side progress past Manchester City. However, his chances of making the World Cup squad now appear uncertain.
Tuchel defended his decision to recall White, citing the defender’s immediate and enthusiastic response when approached about a return.
“His reaction was very positive and emotional. It showed he really wants to be part of this,” Tuchel added. “The way he has trained has been exceptional.”
The German coach has also rested several senior players for the Uruguay fixture, including captain Harry Kane, offering opportunities to fringe players to impress.
Dominic Solanke and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are among those expected to feature as they compete for a place as Kane’s deputy.
