Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz secured the year-end world number one ranking on 13 November 2025 after a commanding 6-4, 6-1 victory over Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti at the ATP Finals in Turin. The win lifted him above Jannik Sinner in the standings and confirmed top spot in the Jimmy Connors Group.

Alcaraz, a double Grand Slam winner this season with 70 match wins, will finish 2025 as world number one regardless of Saturday’s semi-final result or whether Sinner successfully defends his title. The Spaniard is chasing his first ATP Finals crown and looks set for yet another potential showdown with Sinner, who topped the Bjorn Borg Group a day earlier.

“It means the world to me… the year number one is always a goal,” Alcaraz said. “At the start of the season I saw number one very far away, with Jannik winning almost everything. The work we put in, through the ups and downs, makes me really proud.”

Alcaraz has beaten Sinner four times in five meetings this year, all in major finals, including their French Open epic in June. On Thursday he handled Musetti with authority, despite the Italian receiving strong backing from the home crowd. Musetti, who reached the Finals only after Novak Djokovic withdrew, faded in the second set after a gruelling few months. “I needed a miracle today,” he admitted.

Earlier, Australia’s Alex de Minaur booked his place in the semi-finals with a 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 win over Taylor Fritz, a victory he needed in straight sets to progress. He now faces Sinner. De Minaur, who leads the tour with 43 hard-court wins this year, said he had emerged from “one of the toughest days” of his career after his defeat to Musetti on Tuesday. “I made peace with myself and committed to my game,” he said.

Fritz’s defeat, sealed in one hour and 35 minutes, ended the American’s campaign at this year’s Finals.
