The holy Akheri Chahar Shamba will be observed across Bangladesh on 12 August as the moon marking the beginning of the month of Safar 1448 Hijri was sighted in the country, the National Moon Sighting Committee has announced.
According to a press release issued by the Islamic Foundation (IF), the month of Safar will commence on Thursday, following the sighting of the new moon.
The announcement was made after a meeting of the National Moon Sighting Committee held on Wednesday evening at the conference room of the Islamic Foundation at Baitul Mukarram in the capital.
Religious Affairs Secretary Munshi Alauddin Al Azad chaired the meeting.
The committee made the decision after examining reports received from the offices of Deputy Commissioners across the country, the Islamic Foundation’s headquarters and its divisional and district offices, as well as information from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department and the Bangladesh Space Research and Remote Sensing Organisation (SPARRSO).
Akheri Chahar Shamba is observed in remembrance of the recovery of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) from a prolonged illness.
