The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has approved the filing of a case against SM Asif Shams, the former mayor of Bera Municipality in Pabna, for failing to submit his wealth statement within the stipulated timeframe.
Shams is the son of former state minister for Home Affairs and former deputy speaker Md Shamsul Haque Tuku.
At a press briefing on Tuesday, ACC Deputy Director Aktarul Islam announced that the commission has decided to file the case under Section 26(2) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004.
The initiative to seek the wealth statement of Asif Shams was launched as part of an ongoing inquiry into allegations that his father, Tuku, accumulated vast wealth by abusing his political influence.
According to the ACC documents, the wealth statement notice was sent to the permanent address of Asif Shams. Under the law, he was granted 21 working days to submit his statement.
However, the deadline expired on 18 February, and Shams failed to submit the wealth statement. He did not submit any application seeking an extension of time either. Consequently, the commission approved the filing of a non-submission case against him.
ACC sources revealed that a separate case was previously filed against Tuku on 23 December 2025 at the ACC’s Pabna Integrated District Office on charges of acquiring wealth beyond known sources of income. That case is currently under investigation.
