Iran on Saturday began six days of public funeral ceremonies for its late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, months after he was killed in an airstrike at the outset of the war. He was 86.
Authorities placed Khamenei’s coffin on display inside a glass case at Tehran’s Grand Mosalla, where thousands of mourners gathered to pay their final respects. Many were seen weeping, while others chanted, “Our word is one! Revenge! Revenge!”
Mourners carried banners and Iranian flags, as giant billboards bearing Khamenei’s portrait were displayed across the capital. Groups of men also beat their chests in unison, a traditional Shiite mourning ritual observed during funeral processions, reports AP.
