Tanzid Hasan’s 89 off 62 was in vain as the West Indies clean swept Bangladesh, winning the third and final T20I of the series by 5 wickets at the Bir Sreshtho Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium in Chattogram on Friday.
Bangladesh managed only 151 runs despite Tanzid’s valiant effort after opting to bat first. The West Indies, despite a slow start, reached the target with overs remaining. Ackeem Auguste and Roston Chase both struck destructive fifties.
Auguste made 50 off 24 balls, marking his maiden fifty, while Chase scored 50 off 29 balls. They added 91 runs off 46 balls, the highest fourth-wicket partnership for the West Indies against Bangladesh. Having won the previous four bilateral series, this was Bangladesh’s first clean sweep since they lost 3-0 to Pakistan in May.
Chasing a moderate target, Alick Athanaze struggled before falling for one off eight balls when he was stumped off Mahedi Hasan. Amir Jangoo got things going by striking Taskin Ahmed for 18 runs in the fifth over.
Brandon King and Jangoo, who made 34 off 23, fell within 12 balls to Nasum Ahmed and Rishad Hossain respectively before Auguste and Chase took control. They both fell within three deliveries to Rishad, but the match was effectively over for the hosts at that point.
Earlier, Bangladesh’s batting was all about Tanzid. He scored 58.94 percent of the team’s total, the highest for any Bangladeshi batter, surpassing Tamim Iqbal’s 57.22 percent against Oman in Dharamsala in 2016.
Parvez Hossain and Liton Das could not get going despite spending some time at the crease. Only Saif Hassan, who made 23 off 22 balls, reached double figures besides Tanzid. He added 63 off 43 balls with Tanzid, forming the highest partnership of the innings.
Tanzid became the fastest Bangladeshi batter to reach 1,000 T20I runs, achieving the milestone in 42 innings while scoring his 10th fifty in 36 balls. He surpassed Towhid Hridoy, who required 45 innings.
However, Tanzid had a charmed life as he was dropped on 0, 12, 58, and 66 runs, and also survived a successful review. The left-hander finally fell on the first ball of the last over, caught at mid-off. He hit nine fours and four sixes.
Shoriful Islam was bowled on the very next ball, completing Romario Shepherd’s hat-trick. Nurul Hasan had been dismissed on the last ball of Shepherd’s previous over. Shepherd finished with figures of 3-36, becoming the second West Indian after Jason Holder to claim a T20I hat-trick.
Bangladesh lost seven wickets while adding only 33 runs in the last 25 balls. Jason Holder and Khary Pierre took two wickets each, while Akeal Hossain and Roston Chase shared two wickets between them.
