Kane Williamson hopes to continue playing for New Zealand until the 2027 World Cup. The former captain is set to return in the upcoming three-match ODI series against England, starting Monday at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.
The 35-year-old has not played for New Zealand since their Champions Trophy final loss to India in March. Now, he is ready to rejoin the side as they prepare for another international challenge.
When asked about his long-term plans, Williamson said he prefers to take things step by step. “I’m not looking too far ahead,” he said. “At the back of my mind, there’s probably the ODI World Cup. Test cricket is also very dear to me.”
He added that his future would depend on both personal goals and the team’s direction. “It’s about what I want, but also what the team needs and where it’s going. We’re keeping the communication open and staying clear about what we want to achieve,” he said.
Williamson also praised the current team setup and said he is happy to contribute whenever possible. “This is a special team that’s always building towards something. If I can be part of that and add value, that’s brilliant.”
The veteran batter has captained New Zealand in 41 Tests and 91 ODIs. He expressed full support for current Test captain Tom Latham and ODI skipper Mitchell Santner.
“I played with Santner in the Champions Trophy and he has a very smart cricket brain,” Williamson said. “He’s calm and cool, and I’m looking forward to playing alongside him again.”
Speaking about Latham, Williamson added, “He’s done the job before and now it’s fully his. He’s organised, passionate, and doing a fantastic job leading the Test side.”
