A clash broke out between two factions of the National Citizen Party (NCP) in the city’s Shahbagh area over a financial dispute.
The incident occurred around 6pm on Friday at the Shahid Abu Sayed International Convention Centre. Yusuf, a leader from the Bangshal area, was injured in the clash and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
According to eyewitnesses, a coordination meeting of NCP’s Dhaka Metropolitan and District branches was being held on the third floor of the convention centre.
Tensions escalated between the Mohammadpur and Bangshal leaders on the second floor, stemming from an argument. By 6:15pm, the situation turned into a violent clash that lasted for nearly half an hour.
Sources say around three months ago, several NCP leaders from the Bangshal area were involved in a financial transaction with a company in Mohammadpur.
When the issue was raised, NCP Dhaka Metropolitan North leader Shoaib tasked Mohammadpur unit leader Riyan to resolve the matter. Allegations have surfaced that Riyan accepted Tk 2 lakh from the several Bangshal leaders and tried to detain them.
Since then, the Bangshal leaders have been unsuccessfully demanding the return of the money. The situation escalated again on Friday when the two sides confronted each other at the convention centre, resulting in renewed tensions and a clash.
Despite the ongoing conflict for around 30 minutes, no central NCP leaders were seen at the scene.
