Police have arrested three people for allegedly gang-raping a teenage girl in the Ayodhya area of Matiranga upazila in Khagrachhari, while another suspect remains absconding.
According to locals, the incident occurred on Monday night when the victim, a hill-tribe teenager, went to the Ayodhya Kali Temple near the India border to attend a religious festival.
Police said the accused, who were known to the girl, lured her away from the temple while she was there with a relative. They then took her to a nearby secluded spot, where they allegedly raped her before fleeing the scene.
After the incident came to light, the victim’s family sought police assistance and filed a case.
On Wednesday evening, locals detained two suspects — Rony Bikash Tripura, 32, and Detol Babu Tripura, 19 — and handed them over to police. Both were placed before court the same day. The third accused, Rimon Tripura, was arrested on Thursday morning, while another suspect, Suman Tripura, is still on the run.
Matiranga Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Toufiqul Islam said the victim’s sister filed a case naming four people. “Three of the accused have been arrested and sent to court, and efforts are ongoing to capture the remaining fugitive,” he said.
