The bearish sentiment in Bangladesh’s capital market deepened as the relentless selling spree continued throughout the final trading session of the week.
The DSEX, the benchmark index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange, fell by 1.01%, losing 54.1 points, and settled at 5,284 points on Thursday.
Sellers continued to dominate the trading board, as most investors preferred to stay watchful of the market’s trend amid the ongoing earnings season, according to a post-closing market commentary by EBL Securities.
Concerns over market momentum, following recent regulatory measures aimed at strengthening market discipline, contributed to the prevailing negative sentiment.
Market turnover also declined by 13.4%, falling to Tk 530 crore.
On the sectoral front, textile stocks recorded the highest turnover, contributing 10.7% of the total, followed by the pharmaceutical sector at 10.0%, and general insurance at 9.9%.
Most sectors displayed dismal returns, with general insurance declining by 3.1%, life insurance falling by 2.8%, and travel stocks dropping by 2.1%.
The mutual fund sector was the only exception, posting marginal gains of 1.7%.
Out of the 397 issues traded, 70 advanced, 290 declined, and 37 remained unchanged.
The Chittagong Stock Exchange also ended the day in the negative zone, with its Selective Categories Index falling by 1.13%, down 62 points, and the All Share Price Index dropping by 0.92%, losing 98.6 points.
Investors remain cautious, awaiting new catalysts to reverse the current downward trend, said EBL Securities.
