Bangladesh Met office on Monday issued an urgent cautionary alert saying at least 21 districts will face thunderstorms accompanied by lightening and strong winds. The met office also warned that the Bay of Bengal may witness one to three low-pressure systems in May. They added that one or two low-pressure system may transform into depressions and intensify into cyclonic storm.

“We are observing the bay and till date there is no sign of any severe cyclonic storm”  says met expert Mohammad Abdur Rahman Khan.

The forecasters predict two to three moderate to severe nor’westers (Kalbaishakhi storms) during May, alongside three to five days of thunderstorms with hail.

One or two severe heatwaves, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, are expected to sweep parts of the country. Night temperature are also likely to remain high throughout the month.

While overall rainfall is expected to be normal in May, isolated heavy showers could temporarily raise water levels in rivers across the northern, northeastern and southern regions. River flow is otherwise expected to remain within normal limits.

May is typically one of Bangladesh’s stormiest and second hottest months.
