BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has said that the unstable situation in the country will not end until a political government is established. He said, “The sooner we can lead the country towards an election and restore a political environment, the better. Only then can the country free itself from instability.”
He added, “An elected government, with public support, can bring all state institutions under the control of the political authority – this is only possible with an elected government. Otherwise, such incidents will continue to occur, and the unstable situation will not end anytime soon.”
He made these comments on Thursday afternoon while visiting the residence of Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur at the Mohanagar Project in Hatirjheel, Dhaka. He spoke with Nur and inquired about his treatment.
After meeting Nur, the BNP leader responded to various questions from journalists. The BNP leader said, “We want stability in the country, and the people also want stability. We want to gradually bring Bangladesh back to a democratic order and ensure everyone’s safety through a stable environment. However, to achieve this, an election is necessary to form a new government.”
He mentioned, “Noor emphasised that the sooner we hold an election, the sooner we can have a democratic government with public support and political strength. Until an elected government is formed, such unstable incidents will continue.”
He noted that blaming anyone for this is futile, and such events may occur more frequently in the future because there is no parliament and a lack of accountability.
Amir Khosru went on to state: “There is no problem if someone wants a ‘proportional representation’ (PR) system election. People can demand various things. But why should we demand the same? It is because of these excessive demands that consensus cannot be reached. There are many political parties with different thoughts, philosophies, and ideas. If there were no diverse opinions, there would be no separate parties.”
He added, “The country is now moving towards an election, and for this, we have all made sacrifices over the past 15–16 years. The demands of any party have no direct relation to the election – they can have their demands, but they must take them to the people, secure a public mandate, and fulfill them through the election process in parliament. This is the essence of democracy.”
Regarding Nurul Haque Nur, Amir Khosru said, “Nur is going to Singapore for advanced treatment.”
It is worth noting that on the night of August 29, a clash occurred between activists of Gono Odhikar Parishad and Jatiya Party in Vijaynagar. Law enforcement agencies intervened to disperse both sides.
During this, Nur, the party’s General Secretary Rashed Khan, and at least 50 others were injured. Seriously injured, Nur was first taken to Islami Bank Hospital and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on doctors’ advice. After 18 days of treatment at Dhaka Medical College, Nurul Haque Noor returned home last Monday.
