The Bangladesh national football team remain stranded in Kathmandu after their scheduled flight to Dhaka was cancelled on Tuesday due to the closure of Tribhuvan International Airport amid escalating violence in Nepal.
The team were originally due to return on Wednesday following the cancellation of their second and final FIFA friendly against Nepal. The fixture was called off after violent unrest on Monday left at least 19 people dead.
In light of the worsening security situation, the Bangladesh Football Federation arranged for the team’s return to be brought forward to Tuesday on flight BG 0372 with Biman Bangladesh Airlines. The players and coaching staff were packed and ready to leave their base at the Crowne Imperial Hotel when authorities barred their departure.
The closure of the airport and deteriorating security in the capital left the squad confined to their hotel. The timing of their return to Dhaka is now uncertain.
Tensions have risen sharply in Nepal, with reports emerging that Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has resigned as the situation in the Himalayan nation continues to evolve.
