The bodies of a mother and her daughter were discovered early Monday morning in a rented house on the second floor of Nelly Cottage in North Kaliajuri, Cumilla city.
The deceased have been identified as Fatema, widow of the late Cumilla court accountant Haji Nurul Islam, and their daughter Sumaiya Afrin Rinty, a student of the Public Administration Department at Cumilla University.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the victims may have been strangled, though the exact cause and time of death remain under investigation. Police are reviewing CCTV footage to identify any potential suspects.
Property owner Anisul Islam Rana stated that Haji Nurul Islam had rented the house around four years ago. After his passing last year, Fatema, Sumaiya, and their two sons continued to live there. Rana added that the family had minimal interaction with the neighbors. On Sunday night, the sons returned from Dhaka and found the front door open. Initially thinking their mother and sister were asleep, they alerted authorities when they received no response.
The police recovered the bodies and sent them to the Cumilla Medical College morgue for autopsy.
OC Md Mohinul Islam of Cumilla Kotwali Model Police Station confirmed that there were no visible external injuries. While the cause of death will be confirmed after the autopsy, the case is currently being treated as a suspected homicide.
