The 56th Director-General level border conference between the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and India’s Border Security Force (BSF) commenced on Tuesday morning at the BGB headquarters in Pilkhana, Dhaka. The four-day conference marks a significant step in strengthening bilateral border security cooperation.
The Bangladeshi delegation, led by BGB Director-General Major General Mohammad Ashraful Zaman Siddiqui, comprises 21 members, including senior BGB officials. Representatives from the offices of the Chief Adviser, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Shipping, the Roads and Highways Division, the Survey Department, the Joint River Commission, and the Narcotics Control Directorate are also part of the delegation.
On the Indian side, the 11-member delegation is led by BSF Director-General Shri Daljit Singh Chowdhury, IPS, and includes senior BSF officials along with representatives from India’s Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of External Affairs, and the Indian High Commission in Dhaka.
This year’s conference will focus on key issues such as preventing border killings, curbing illegal immigration, and combating cross-border trafficking of drugs, arms, and ammunition.
Discussions will also address infrastructure development within 150 yards of the international border, the prevention of unauthorized construction, the preservation of border rivers, and securing fair water shares for these rivers.
Additionally, the meeting will explore joint efforts for integrated border management, de-escalating tensions arising from recent anti-Bangladesh media campaigns in India and addressing bilateral concerns and border-related matters.
The conference will conclude with an official closing ceremony on the morning of August 28, after which the Indian delegation will return to India.
