Abahani Limited Dhaka are set for a stern test tomorrow as they take on Kyrgyz champions Muras United in the AFC competition at the Bangabandhu National Stadium. The match kicks off at 5pm, with both sides eager to start their campaign on a winning note.
Muras United, a relatively new club with only two years of history, touched down in Dhaka this morning via a chartered flight. Despite their short existence, they arrive with the ambition of making a mark in their first AFC tournament appearance.
Speaking at the official pre-match press conference, Muras head coach Serhiy Puchkov showed respect for Abahani’s experience in continental football. “Abahani are an experienced AFC side and multiple-time domestic champions. Our players also have plenty of experience and we will give our maximum effort tomorrow,” he said.
Team captain Zhaparov Amir echoed his coach’s confidence. “We have come here fully prepared. Our aim is to win and we will give our best on the pitch,” he stated.
Bangladeshi clubs have historically struggled against Kyrgyz opposition in AFC competitions, with no wins recorded in the past decade. When asked about this record, Serhiy noted, “Those two clubs you mentioned are experienced teams in Kyrgyz football. We may be new, but we want to build our own tradition.”
Preparation for the match has been based on limited scouting. “So far, we have only watched one of Abahani’s matches, from 27 May. We analysed it carefully and prepared accordingly. Our squad is a mix of local and foreign players, and the team atmosphere is very positive, which will help us in our push for victory,” Serhiy explained.
However, Muras United will face an immediate challenge in adapting to Dhaka’s heat and humidity after arriving from Kyrgyzstan’s cooler climate. “We have adjusted to the time zone, but the hot and humid conditions here will be a tough test for our players,” the coach admitted.
For Abahani, this match presents an opportunity not only to start their continental campaign strongly but also to break their long winless streak against Kyrgyz clubs. The home crowd at Bangabandhu Stadium will be hoping their team can rise to the occasion.
