Colombia secured their place in the Women’s Copa America final on Monday after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Argentina. After a tense goalless draw in regular time, Colombia triumphed 5-4 in the shootout to seal their spot in the final, alongside a qualification for the 2024 Olympics in Los Angeles.
The shootout was full of nerve-wracking moments. Colombian goalkeeper Katherine Tapia played a pivotal role, saving Paulina Gramaglia’s spot-kick to give her side the early advantage. Mayra Ramirez then missed her penalty, striking the crossbar, which briefly revived Argentina’s hopes. However, Wendy Bonilla kept her cool, scoring the decisive kick for Colombia. The pressure then mounted on Eliana Stabile, who struck the bar, sending Argentina crashing out and Colombia into the final.
“We are finalists and we qualified for the Olympics in Los Angeles, that was our objective. We are prepared for the final,” said Tapia after the match, reflecting on the team’s hard-fought victory.
In the opening minutes, Argentina looked the more dangerous side, with Florencia Bonsegundo and Yamila Rodriguez testing the Colombian defense. However, Tapia stood firm, making crucial saves to keep her side in the game.
As the first half progressed, both teams suffered injuries that disrupted the flow of play. Despite the setbacks, Colombia slowly grew into the game, with Ramirez, Leicy Santos, and Linda Caicedo creating several chances but unable to find the back of the net.
After halftime, Colombia ramped up the pressure. They came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock when Valerin Loboa had a close-range effort that seemed destined for the goal, but Argentina goalkeeper Solana Pereyra made a spectacular save to deny them.
The match also marked a milestone in the tournament as it was the first time VAR (Video Assistant Referee) was used, with the technology being available only in the knockout stages. In stoppage time, the referee reviewed an incident in the penalty area involving Sophia Braun and Manuela Pavi, ultimately deciding that no penalty should be awarded.
With both teams locked at 0-0 at the end of regular time, the match was decided by the shootout, and Colombia emerged as the victors. The win ensures their place in the final and a spot at the 2024 Paris Olympics, a double achievement that sets up an exciting finale for the South American champions.
