An elderly woman and her granddaughter-in-law were brutally murdered, while a teenage girl was critically injured in a knife attack at their home in Islampur (Horigari) West Para of Bogura Sadar.
The shocking incident occurred around 9:00 pm on Wednesday, 16 July.
The deceased have been identified as Laily Bewa, 80, and her granddaughter-in-law Habiba Yasmin, 21. A 15-year-old girl named Bannya, Habiba’s sister-in-law, sustained serious injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura.
Family members have accused Bannya’s former boyfriend, a young man named Saikat Islam, of carrying out the attack.
Habiba Yasmin was the wife of Parvez Islam, a resident of the area. Laily Bewa was Parvez’s grandmother, and Bannya is his younger sister. According to the family, Bannya had recently passed her SSC examinations. While still in school, she had a relationship with Saikat, which the family later forced her to end after learning of his alleged drug addiction. Since then, he had reportedly been harassing her and pressuring the family to accept him for marriage.
At the time of the incident, Bannya’s parents, Bulbul and Parveen, were at their nearby grocery shop. Their younger son, Kaushik, was attending private tuition, and Parvez was also out. Inside the house were Laily Bewa, Habiba Yasmin, Bannya, and Habiba’s seven-month-old baby.
Locals reported that Bannya, covered in blood, ran out of the house screaming for help. Neighbours rushed to the scene and found Habiba’s lifeless body lying near a washbasin on the veranda, her throat slit and blood pooling around her. Inside the house, Laily was found unconscious with similar injuries. Habiba’s infant was seen crawling through the blood.
All three victims were rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared Laily and Habiba dead. Bannya was admitted for emergency treatment.
Additional Superintendent of Police Abu Sufian stated that a manhunt is underway to apprehend those involved. The bodies will be handed over to the family following autopsy procedures.
