At least 15 people, including police personnel, were injured in repeated clashes between law enforcers and garment workers at Ulail and Hemayetpur in Savar.
The clashes erupted as hundreds of workers from various garment factories gathered and blocked Dhaka-Aricha highway for nearly an hour, starting from 9:30am, demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk30,000.
According to police, demonstrating workers hurled brickbats at Al-Muslim Garments and targeted police officers. In response, police fired tear gas shells in self-defence to disperse the crowd.
Vehicular movement on the highway was halted for about an hour as a result of the blockade
Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been on alert patrol on the highway since the morning and brought the situation under control after arriving at the scene.
Saiful Alam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Savar Model Police Station, said efforts were ongoing to bring the situation under control.
Meanwhile, no untoward incidents have been reported in Ashulia so far.
