Police have detained at least four people following a clash between law enforcers and demonstrators during a garment workers’ movement in the capital’s Mirpur area.

The detentions were made on Tuesday, although the individuals claimed that they are not garment workers, said police.

Earlier, the workers gathered and took positions on various roads, including Mirpur-10, Mirpur-11, and underneath Pallabi metro rail station.

At one point, a series of chases, counter-chases, and brickbat throwing broke out between the police and the demonstrators.

To bring the situation under control, police lobbed sound grenades and tear-gas shells.

Addressing the incident, Dhaka Metropolitan Police South Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Touhidul Arif said miscreants had infiltrated the garment workers’ protest.

DC Arif further said actual garment workers had either returned home after their shifts or were working inside factories. A detailed investigation will be conducted later to identify who is instigating the unrest under the guise of movement and for what purpose the sabotage is being carried out.

Currently, the situation at Mirpur-10 roundabout and other primary roads has normalised.
