Nearly 31 scholars and practitioners from Bangladesh participated in the two-day 16th International Conference of the SAARC Psychiatric Federation (SPF) 2026, held at the Maldives National University on 1–2 November 2026.

Sajidha Mohamed, first lady of the Maldives, attended the opening ceremony as chief guest, alongside Dr Md Nazmul Islam, high commissioner of Bangladesh to the Maldives.
The participation of the high commissioner and the Bangladeshi delegation reflects the commitment of the Bangladesh High Commission in the Maldives to advancing education diplomacy, intellectual cooperation, professional connectivity, and closer people-to-people relations.
Mental health was highlighted as an area where shared knowledge and professional collaboration contribute to addressing common societal challenges, with the conference providing a meaningful platform to strengthen collective capacity.

The significant participation of Bangladeshi academics demonstrates the contribution of Bangladesh’s intellectual community to regional knowledge-sharing initiatives, showcasing the country’s academic capabilities while strengthening connections with institutions and experts in neighbouring countries.
The High Commission recognises education diplomacy as an effective instrument for building lasting bilateral relationships beyond traditional diplomatic engagement.
Academic conferences, professional exchanges, and institutional interactions create opportunities for sustained cooperation, mutual learning, and professional network development, helping translate friendly relations into practical cooperation involving academics, researchers, professionals, and young people.
This engagement also reflects the broader commitment of the Government of Bangladesh to regional cooperation, human resource development, and the exchange of knowledge and expertise.
The High Commission will continue to encourage and facilitate educational, academic, and professional cooperation to complement conventional diplomatic ties with stronger intellectual links and institutional partnerships, contributing to a more dynamic, inclusive, and mutually beneficial Bangladesh–Maldives relationship.
