The Ashulia industrial zone in Dhaka has been rocked by workers’ protests over various demands, including a minimum monthly wage of Tk30,000.
During the demonstrations, Assistant Superintendent of Police Shoaib Ahmed of Industrial Police-1 was injured after being struck by a brick allegedly thrown by workers on Monday.
A covered van belonging to Hamim Group was also set on fire.
Around 9:30am, workers of the Newage Group factory in Narsinghpur came out of the factory and began demonstrating in the area.
The protests later spread to the fronts of nearby factories, prompting authorities to declare general holidays at several factories.
During the protests in front of Hamim Group, police fired tear gas shells to disperse the workers. This was followed by repeated chases and counter-chases, as well as incidents of brick-throwing.
Additional police and Armed Police Battalion (APBn) personnel have been deployed to bring the situation under control.
