Police have sought a seven-day remand for Ahmed Shahriar Reza Dwip, a friend of former Air Force officer KM Tahsif Souri, whose body was recovered from the Turag River in Uttarkhan, Dhaka.
The investigation officer produced Dwip before the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court after showing him arrested in the murder case filed with Uttarkhan Police Station and sought the remand on Saturday.
Police said they submitted the petition to uncover the circumstances surrounding Tahsif’s death, identify and arrest other individuals involved, and recover evidence used in the incident.
The petition stated that on the evening of 27 October, suspected accused Dwip, 23, called Tahsif and took him outside.
The following day, around 4:30pm on 28 October, police received information through the emergency hotline 999 that an unidentified body was floating in the river near Rajabari Ghat under Uttarkhan Police Station.
During the preparation of the inquest report, the deceased was identified through an iPhone found in the pocket of his trousers. He was a former Air Force flight lieutenant.
The petition further stated that, with the help of information technology and information provided by sources, police learned that the accused had gone with Tahsif to the Mazar Basti area under Tongi West Police Station.
During preliminary questioning, Dwip identified the deceased as his senior and elder brother. However, based on information and evidence gathered during the investigation, police suspect his involvement in the murder.
Police said Dwip needs to be questioned to reveal the motive and circumstances of the murder, identify and arrest other unidentified suspects, recover evidence and the motorcycle used by the deceased, and determine the location where the killing took place.
Deputy Commissioner (Uttara Division) of Police Md Rezaul Karim said the case was filed over allegations that the victim was murdered and his body dumped in the river to conceal the crime.
Unidentified assailants have been named as accused in the case. Tahsif’s father filed the case under Sections 302, 201 and 34 of the Penal Code.
