Sir Patrick Stewart’s final screen appearance will come in Avengers: Doomsday, where he returns as Professor Charles Xavier. Marvel Studios confirmed the news in a tribute to the actor, who died at 86.

According to Variety, the film marks Stewart’s ninth appearance as the iconic X-Men character. He first played Professor X in 2000’s X-Men, bringing what Marvel described as “composure, class, and wisdom” to the telepathic mutant and mentor.

Stewart reprised the role in several films, including X2: X-Men United (2003), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), The Wolverine (2013), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) and Logan (2017).

In its tribute, Marvel praised Stewart for bringing “extraordinary grace, intelligence, and humanity” to Professor X. The studio said he had defined the character for generations of fans, from X-Men and Logan to Avengers: Doomsday.

Avengers: Doomsday, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, is scheduled to open in cinemas on 18 December.
